This was a new song not so long ago, now it’s oldish.
Facebook Fails, Text Message Wins
I believe I would have missed last night’s gig due to not being part of the Facebook revolution. In fact, someone in attendance there mentioned I’d missed one the night before at the Kraak Gallery for that very reason. Thankfully, one of the bands tipped me off via text message. It’s telling that ten years ago I would’ve been complaining about missing gigs through not having a mobile phone, another technological advance that I was stubbornly refusing to be part of for some reason.
Is it time to cave in and join your merry band of gossip mongering, screen worshipping, whereabouts tracking, girl stalking, mundane fact reading, time wasting, compliment fishing, human contact obsessed, square-eyeds? Probably not. I can be positively mule-like when it suits me.
Instead it’s time for me to lend my support to another gig that apparently is not being advertised on Facebook for some reason or other. Here it is…
Thursday April 12th, Kraak Gallery, Cheap
Ceramic Hobs,
Female Borstal (for fans of DRUNK IN HELL with whome they’ve recently done a split CDR)
Heroin Diet
And one more band I can’t remember the name of.
Anyway, back to the gig. It was a totally great affair. I missed Vei, who I’m sure would’ve been a pleasure to hear given the excellent compliments that were dropped into conversation later in the night. NASDAQ-collaborators Borland followed Vei and were great, as usual. Douga were the main attraction for me and they did not disappoint. The songs are brilliantly conceived, with pretty melodies and seductive chords, the rhythm section is as fine as any you’ll see and the beautiful washes of delayed noise and dreamy psych that bookend each song are the key ingredient that turn this band into the top-notch entertainers that they are. It’s aesthetically comparable to ‘A Storm In Heaven’-era Verve, but there’s something new here too. Go find em.
A few dates for your calendar or to claim you’re attending on Facebook…
Sat April 7th – My blues band are playing at the Victoria in Withington. 9pm, free.
Sat April 28th – dbh, Fuel, free. Other acts are playing too but I don’t know who.
Thu May 3rd – dbh/TG Elias/Mat Gray – guest night at Chorlton folk club. We will be playing in the arrangement used by the BBC’s songwriter’s circle. Should be a fun do.
Sun May 6th – Sounds From The Other City, featuring Suttree, NASDAQ, DAQ Sabbath and much, much more.
Sat May 19th – Emphemetry are playing at The Castle as part of a Carefully Planned all-dayer.
Future Adventures – Busy December
7/12/11 – The Gaslamp, Bridge St – I’m playing some violin with the legendary Irma Vep.
10/12/11 – St. Margaret’s Church, Whalley Range – I’ve been recruited to play violin and piano with my old touring buddies Kalbakken. Can’t think when I last saw them play, should be great!
11/12/11 – 6 till 9 is the Blues Night at Sam’s Chophouse, after which I’m heading down to Mary & Archie’s in West Didsbury (Burton Rd) to play a Suttree set. Both gigs are FREE!
14/12/11 – Albany Road House – dbh, solo set, supporting touring singer/songwriter PJ Bond
15/12/11 – Bury Library – anyone live in Bury? Get on down to this! Don’t know times, probably normal gig time, costs £4. I think Tribal Fighters will be playing, deploying their unique brand of funky mathy post-rock. But I’m not sure.
18/12/11 – More Blues at Sam’s Chophouse, 6 till 9. Playing guitar in various combinations with Pat Clarke (harmonica/vocals), Virginia Harvey (guitar/vocals) and Mark Greer (guitar/slide/vocals). FREE!
19/12/11 – Nip & Tipple – Spoonful’s Xmas party. I’ll be playing a couple of solo tunes, probably Christmas ones if I get my act together. There may also be a bit of violin moonlighting. Best time you can have in Whalley Range that night, I promise, and all for FREE!
31/12/11 – Islington Mill – Black Fucking Sabbath. Yes, it’s wig and moustache time again…
The Smiths
Here’s a fine video of me, shot and recorded by the magnificent Dave Rowe at the impressive Racket Audio studio where NASDAQ recorded our Dead Peasants CD.
Thanks Dave.
I’m playing a set of similar covers on the electric guitar this Monday (November 21st) at The Nip & Tipple in Whalley Range, so come on down to see it in the flesh!
In other important news – ‘DAQ Sabbath, everyone’s favourite Black Sabbath tribute band, are playing another gig on New Year’s Eve at Islington Mill. Don’t miss out, come and celebrate the passing of another year with us – Manatees, Action Beat, Braves (people from 65 Days Of Static and Mirimar Disaster) and loads, loads more will be there to entertain you. Surely the only place to be. We’re on just after midnight.
Black Sabbath
Not long till Black Sabbath time! Unfortunately the Night & Day one has been cancelled so don’t go there. It’s pretty rubbish in there anyway, isn’t it? Would it kill them to get some beer on tap?
The worst thing about this cancellation is that Ed Troup will no longer be Geezer. The excellent Mike Seal will be taking his place, but I don’t know if the DAQ SABBATH name can be used any longer…
Here’s a sneak preview of the set –
NIB
War Pigs
Snowblind
Into The Void
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Sweat Leaf
And here’s where to go to watch it – The Whitworth pub on Saturday October 29th. Loadsa great metal happening, we’re on very late. £1 entry.
It’s so great to play Black Sabbath songs. Pure power.
